Consider: slight differences between the Echo and the Platz

If you are in America, this is familiar to you:

The Echo, offered as a two or four door. Now, the non-US spec version, the Platz, shown as a two door, because Wikipedia:

There are a couple differences. First and most obvious is the plastic cladding on the Echo. Less obvious (due to the cladding) is that the Echo is a little taller, probably due to our crap roads and crash regulations.

Because of the cladding and lift, I hereby declare..

the Echo is a crossover.

The US Echo was also available without the cladding

But I am still pissed we never got the Echo hatch (C anada did, though)

We got the Echo sedan AND the hatch up here in Canada...always loved the hatch!

That being said, not all Echo sedans in the US and Canada had that plastic cladding. In fact, your second pic IS a US-spec 2-door Echo (the front license plate says Maryland on it)...?

I rode around Vancouver in the back seat of a 2door Echo, I didn’t enjoy 120km on the freeway..

I do want a Vitz cup car though ;

My guess is it’s a trim level thing, not an Echo vs. Platz thing.

Into the early 2000s, it was common for low-end models of  cars to have unpainted trim pieces to make them look cheaper.

I actually considered a first-gen Echo hatch/ Vitz as a first car when I ended up getting my Su baru! The Vitz was awesome, but used Toyotas hold their value pretty well and it was out of my price range...

It was a friends Echo and she took us down to Granville - best car to park ever, it tucked into the tiniest little spot..

Coming from a country that got this as the Yaris, in 3 and 5 door hatchback, as a saloon and coupe look awkward.

Does any of North America get the current Toyota Yaris (or what ever it’s named there)?

The Yaris just stopped being sold in the US in 2019. But they never sold well. I think the Prius C took most of its potential sales.
